Programming associated with the Lee and Grant traveling exhibit was, in part, made possible by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Division of Public Programs. The exhibit and programming grants were administered by ExhibitsUSA and Mid-America Arts Alliance of Kansas City, Missouri. Lee and Grant Special Traveling Exhibit Lee and Grant sponsored by Virginia Historical Society, ExhibitsUSA, Mid-America Arts Alliance, National Endowment for the Humanities, Carthage Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Powers Museum. September 2010 September 01 -- Exhibit Grand Opening at 10 am. Open House remainder of day (refreshments served from noon - 3:00 pm) until 5:00 pm. All first day visitors will be entered for a door prize drawn at end of day. September 02 -- Storytime in a Civil War Tent (10:30 am) featuring selected stories from 1860 School & Family Primer followed by a hands-on activity. Labor Day Weekend -- Civil War Geocache Event (Email for details on how to participate prior to Sept. 2. Advance registration necessary, no fee.) September 04 -- Rhoda Fairchild Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution will be holding their monthly session in the meeting room of the museum. (No video program presented in meeting room this day.)September 03 & 04 -- Dinner with President Grant and Mrs. Julia Dent Grant, 7:00 pm. Ticketed event/advance reservations necessary before August 31. SOLD OUT EVENT. Location moved to Powers Museum.
September 05 -- Civil War Veterans in Park Cemetery Sunday afternoon program (at 4:00 pm) at Park Cemetery led by Michele Hansford. Museum would appreciate knowing who is attending so an appropriate number of print materials can be prepared. Meet at GAR monument to west of house off main entrance drive.
September 06 -- Special Monday Labor Day Opening noon to 5:00 pm at Museum September 06 -- Civil War Veterans in Cedar Hill Cemetery Monday morning program (at 10:00 am) led by Michele Hansford. Museum would appreciate knowing who is attending so an appropriate number of print materials can be prepared.
*************************************************************************************** September 07 -- Viewers may like to know that author Larry Wood is speaking at the Webb City Library, 101 S. Liberty St., at 6:00 pm on his recent book: The Two Civil War Battles of Newtonia. This is a free program on the first floor of the library (Perry Room) sponsored by the Webb City Genealogical Society. The public is invited to attend. *************************************************************************************** September 08 -- Wednesday Craft Day -- Create a Civil War Ancestor Scrapbook Page during the Make & Take session (come and go during 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm); $3.00 suggested donation for supplies. NEW September 08 -- Heads-up on this one......... Hillbilly Model T Tour 2010 will be in Carthage Wednesday for various activities including possible stops by individual car owners at the Powers Museum. Call museum for more info. Some of the cars may be returning to Carthage Friday Sept. 10. September 09 -- Thursday evening opening with program at 7:00 pm featuring Missouri Southern State University Prof. Steven Wagner who will present Generals as Presidents. (Museum will close at 5 pm and re-open at 6:30.)
September 12 -- Morning time to be determined yet, approx. 10:30 to 11am arrival -- Route 66 Association of Missouri 2010 Motor Tour stop. For more info, see association's website. Tour open to non-members, but advance registration is necessary. Visitors for Lee and Grant probably will see some great classic and vintage cars while motor tour participants stop for a quick museum visit in the late morning. September 12 -- Sunday afternoon program at 2:00 pm featuring retired Missouri Southern State University Prof. Virginia Laas who will present The Blair Family and their Insights on Lee, Grant and Lincoln.
September 14 -- Missouri Archaeology Month Program (at Carthage Library, 6th & Garrison), 7:00 pm. Dr. Lyle Sparkman (Missouri Archaeological Society President) will present on Civil War Archaeology at Pea Ridge National Battlefield. September 15 -- Wednesday Craft Day -- Come learn about how loved ones kept in touch with their Civil War soldiers during the Make & Take session (come and go during 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm) then stamp or decorate a patriotic card or stationary; $3.00 suggested donation for supplies. September 16 -- Storytime in a Civil War Tent (10:30 am) featuring elected stories from 1860 Southern Primer followed by a hands-on activity for children.
Civil War Chautauqua Event, Sept. 17-19 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WONDERFUL NEWS! The Helen S. Boylan Foundation has given a grant to the Powers Museum which will allow us to present the September Civil War Chautauqua for free (no ticket fee) to those attending. Thank you Boylan Foundation board members! September 17 -- General Robert E. Lee's New Hat (Lee presented by Norman Joy) at Stone's Throw Theatre (796 S. Stone Lane -- just west of Powers Museum/Municipal Park on old Route 66) at 7:30 pm. September 18 -- General Ulysses S. Grant presented by Dave Dickerson at Stone's Throw Theatre (796 S. Stone Lane -- just west of Powers Museum/Municipal Park on old Route 66) at 7:30 pm. . September 19 -- Mary Boykin Chesnut presented by Dianne Moran at Stone's Throw Theatre (796 S. Museum will close at 5:00 pm then re-open at 6:30 pm prior to program.
September 22 -- Wednesday Craft Day -- Come learn about Federal & Confederate soldiers and medical aid societies. During the Make & Take session (come and go during 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm) create a bookmark or other novelty made by such society volunteers and sold at fundraising bazaars; $3.00 suggested donation for supplies. September 23 -- Carthage Chamber of Commerce After Hours Event 4:45 pm to 6:45 pm September 25 -- Saturday afternoon program presented by Fran Black, President of the Mary Whitney Phelps, Tent 22, Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865. The program will be based on the tent's forthcoming book: Marking Civil War History in the Ozarks -- A Guide to Civil War Markers and Monuments in Twenty-Four Southwest Missouri Counties. Program will begin at 1:30 and copies of the book will be for sale in gift shop after the program. Cost is $15.00. (Museum is willing to sell copies by mail order now that the event is over. Please email powersmuseum@att.net for details.)
Members of the Mary Whitney Phelps Tent #22, Daughters of Union, Veterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865, unveiled their new book (to right of ladies) marking Civil War History in the Ozarks. Pictured are (left to right): Sally Bueno, Marilyn Lucas and Fran Black. Special morning activity for Museum Day: Hand Spinning Demonstration by Gary Hansford from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Visitors will be encouraged to use wood carders, drop spindle and other related textile tools. Handouts on spinning and weaving during the Civil War in southwest Missouri will be given to all visitors. September 26 -- Sunday afternoon program with Pam Sanfillipo, Historian at the U. S. Grant National Historic Site in St. Louis will present a program at 2:00 pm on White Haven, St. Louis & Citizen U. S. Grant. September 28 -- Tuesday evening program at 7:00 pm featuring Missouri Southern State University Professor Eugene Berger who will present Mexican War 1846-1848 in which both Lee and Grant participated. (Museum will close at 5 pm then re-open at 6:30 pm.) September 29 -- Wednesday Craft Day -- Come learn about Civil War era quilt patterns as found in ladies magazines of the day and see two Powers Museum pre-Civil War quilts -- one pieced and one appliqued. In the Make & Take session (come and go during 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm) visitors will be able to make paper versions for selected patterns for use as framed prints or other craft use. October 2010 October 1 -- Carthage Emerging Leaders will hold their lunch meeting in the meeting room at noon. (No video presentations this day until afternoon.) October 2 -- Civil War Book Fair (with regional authors who will be signing and selling books on the Civil War in southwest Missouri and other related topics to the Ozarks region), 11 am to 3 pm. A silent auction of selected books and other items will be held throughout the day and the museum will be selling back issues of the Missouri Historical Review including many with Civil War articles.
October 5 -- Storytime in a Civil War Tent (10:30 am) featuring selected stories from 1860s books followed by a hands-on activity for children. October 6 -- What is an American? Teaching American History Grant teachers will meet at the museum in the morning, approx. 10-10:30 am for "Local History Resources" session and time to view exhibit. October 6 -- Wednesday Craft Day & Make & Take session (come and go during 1:00 - 3:00 pm). This will be a repeat of the Sept. 15 program on Civil War correspondence with a modern technology twist. Come make a piece of stationary and matching envelope.October 7 -- Thursday evening program at 7:00 pm featuring Museum Director Michele Hansford who will present Julia Dent Grant's Family in Carthage. (Museum will close at 5:00 pm then re-open at 6:30 pm.)
October 9 -- How to Find Your Civil War Ancestor - Beginning Genealogy presentation by Frankie Meyer by Joplin Globe Genealogy Columnist and author. Morning session at 10:00 am and Afternoon session at 1:00 pm -- both workshops being held at the Carthage Public Library at 5th & Garrison. Author, Joplin Globe columnist and retired teacher Franke Carlin Meyer led two sessions on how to find your Civil War ancestor. Mrs. Meyer also participated in the Author's Fair earlier in the month. October 9 -- Hand Quilting Demonstration from noon to 3:00 pm. Watch volunteers work on a Powers family quilt that was never finished and hear Powers Museum Director Michele Hansford discuss two pre-Civil War quilts on temporary display (at about 2:00 pm). Maple Leaf Festival Week 2010 October 10 -- Sunday afternoon program at 2:00 pm featuring Pittsburg State University History Professor Joe Daley on Comparing the Military Styles of Lee & Grant. October 11 -- Special Monday Columbus Day Holiday Opening Noon to 5 pm October 13 -- Wednesday Craft Day -- Civil War Ancestor Scrapbook Page during the Make & Take session (come and go during 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.) October 16 -- Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm Author/Lawyer Gregory Wolk of St. Louis and the Missouri Civil War Heritage Foundation, will present a brief program on his new book: A Tour Guide to Missouri's Civil War. Copies of the title will be available for sale and author signing, too.
Greg Wolk of St. Louis, Missouri, presented his new guidebook to Missouri Civil War sites. October 16 -- Saturday afternoon event featuring William Worley as General Thomas Ewing and Order #11. Presented at 3:00 pm at the Powers Museum. Admission free, but donations appreciated and will be used to cover costs of this presentation. William Worley, veteran first-person interpretor from Kansas City, Missouri, presented Thomas Ewing as he reflected on his Civil War experiences later in life. October 17 -- Sunday afternoon event featuring the Burnt District Players will present a reader's theater-style performance based on the stories of those displaced by Order #11 entitled Voices of Order #11. Presented at 2:00 pm at the Powers Museum. Admission free, but donations appreciated and will be used to cover costs of this presentation. October 20 -- Last Day of Exhibit for Public Viewing Thank you to the almost 2,000 visitors who came and participated in the exhibit and its programs. Lee and Grant was the second highest attended exhibit in the museum's history.
