Carthage Sportsmen's Protective League (1950–1971)

Donated by: Milo Jackson & Bill Haughawout when CSPL disbanded

Accession: SL1998.002

Undated image from collection featuring (l to r) Gene Cook and Bill Welch on Kellogg Lake.

General Condition of Collection: All contents good except newspaper special editions and odd assortment of clippings.

Please note: Two variations of the organization's name are used throughout collection — with and without the apostrophe S in the name.

Contents: Collection of partial organizational records, miscellaneous correpondence, newspaper clippings/special editions, and photographs concentrating on the development of CSPL's major project and donation to the city of Carthage — Kellogg Lake — now a cooperative effort between the City of Carthage Parks Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Kellogg Lake was created when Highway 66 was re-aligned in the early 1950s to the northeast of Carthage and the collection contains photographs and information on the highway's history as well.

The group was established in 1921 making it one of the earliest private conservation groups (if not the earliest in the state of Missouri). CSPL began sponsoring public conservation educational events in 1947 with the assistance of the Missouri Department of Conservation.

This collection was partially processed upon donation in 1998–1999 but had not been completed in the interim period. Work performed on this collection included general cleaning, organization and boxing (with acid-free boxes, folders and inter-leafing paper), scanning of photographs into Past Perfect software (for identification purposes) and start of catalog records in PP. All newspaper clippings/special editions were photocopied on AF paper and placed in the Powers Museum Reference library for easier access for general researchers not requiring access to the entire collection.

Follow-up Work: Some processed materials may be used in nature center displays and/or interpretation of the lake and a summary of the holdings will be sent to the Joplin office of the Missouri Department of Conservation as well as to the local coordinating committee overseeing the rehabilitation of Kellogg Lake into a nature center at the present. Also, an article on Kellogg Lake/Highway 66 will be created for the Missouri Route 66 Association Magazine at the conclusion of the grant project for possible publication in the summer 2005 issue.

A small amount of clean-up work will also be done on this collection to complete grant project work left unfinished when the project lost one of it workers in mid-January. This will be done in conjunction with the writing of the magazine article this spring. Also, an index associated with a Carthage Evening Press special edition on the CSPL created in Skyfiler in an earlier attempt to process, will be converted to PP software.
