Carthage Women in History
in honor of Women's History Month (March)

In honor of Women's History Month 2006, the Powers Museum is starting a new section on its web site devoted to women of history from the local community. In addition to featuring Marian Wright Powers for whom the museum is named, the other women selected to "christen" this new feature are women who were active in the campaign for female suffrage and/or politics. This selection was made to correspond with the mini-display on the history of the suffrage movement featured at the museum during March and April of 2006.

Throughout 2006 more women in other fields will be added to this portion of the web site and for Women's History Month in 2008, the museum hopes to focus on women from education. We would also like to hear from viewers especially if you have a photo and information on a local relative who you think should be featured.

Also at this time, the museum would like to put out a call for any information on Rev. Lucy B. Lindsey, first ordained female minister of the Christian Church (at least first in Missouri) in 1895. We would especially like to find a photograph of this woman if at all possible. She was active in WCTU and YWCA work as well as possibly Chautauqua programs, but we do not know if she ever pastored a church. Please write or email if you know anything about Rev. Lindsey.

Do you know who these women are?
