Veterans Oral History Project

William Hartman, US Army, World War II, and his wife and daughter

The Powers Museum is now an official partner in the Veterans Oral History Project of the Library of Congress, having completed almost 160 interviews since November 2005. We have been honored to have recorded oral histories and collected pictures and documents from men and women who served or spoke about those who served. They include the US Army, US Army Air Corps, US Air Force, US Marines, US Navy, US Women’s Nurse Corps and US Women’s Army Corps. Although most interviews are from the time of World War II, we also have interviews with veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

H.O. Patrick, Jr. (of Newtonia) with wife and child. Mr. Patrick is one of our 2008 WWII interviewees.

All their stories are impressive and moving. They served from the Aleutians to the South Pacific, Korea and Japan, from the jungles of Vietnam to the fields of Europe, on the seas and in evacuation hospitals. Some were entrusted with training the troops at home. All their stories represent eras of our history that must not be forgotten. If you know of a local veteran we should contact, please let us know here at the museum (417-358-2667) or e-mail. To schedule an interview yourself directly with Marti Pittman, Education Coordinator and VOH Project Leader, please e-mail or call 417-673-3281.

The museum is also looking for volunteers who can help listen to the tapes and complete subject logs on same. You do not have to do full transcriptions. Also, if you would be interested assisting with the taping of veteran's stories (per a prepared set of questions provided by the Library of Congress), we would be glad to have your help. This spring, Mrs. Sneddon's 9th graders at Carthage Junior High School are participating in this project for the second time and we thank them for their assistance. Also, a big THANK YOU goes to Jeanie Hill, volunteer researcher and oral history project worker, for her continued dedication to listening to the project tapes and making the Library of Congress logs.
