Anna
"Annie" White Baxter
1864 – 1944
1882: Graduated Carthage High School
1882–90: Clerked for County Clerk, George Blakeney; later served
other county officials.
1888: Married Charles W. Baxter
1890: Elected Jasper County Clerk; 1st woman elected to this position
in the United States of America. Also thought to be first female elected
to public office in Missouri.
1891–94: Served as Jasper County Clerk.
1892: Green County Courts uphold election of Baxter after defeated male
candidate brings suit.
1894: Left office when she lost re-election bid to Republican candidate.
c.1895: Moved to St. Louis, then Jefferson City after divorcing husband.
1908–16: Worked as land clerk for former Carthaginian Cornelius
Roach, Secretary of State.
1922–25: Financial Secretary to Missouri Constitutional Convention.
1926–30: Secretary to Dean James T. Quarrels, University of Missouri
School of Fine Arts.
Remained active in Democratic Party politics until the end of her life.
