Updates to Arcadia Carthage Picture Book

Summer 2002 Additions & Comments
Cover Image: It has come to the museum's attention that the image on the cover (and also featured on page 89) may be a "Tallyho Party." Named for the English coaches running from London, these livery vechicles were often rented for special outings to the fair or other special events.

A similar image was found among the Schrantz Carthage history articles that are part of the Bank of Carthage Collection. This collection is part of the Missouri Historical Records Advisory Board grant project mentioned elsewhere on the website and newsletter. The date of the book's image may be a little earlier than what is given in the book, as Ward Schrantz found evidence of these Tallyho parties as early as 1902. (The specific "tallyho" article's date is January 17,1957.)

Based on several requests to clarify what buildings pictured in the Carthage: Images of America book were still standing today, the following listing should answer those questions. The images of the buildings below are STILL standing in 2002. (Municipal Park views in the "Leisure" chapter are not included in this list, nor are factory images in the "Industry" chapter note. The latter will be covered in more detail in a future update.)

Please remember "T" stands for top page image and "B" stands for bottom page image. If no designation is given with a page number, both images are still standing.

Ray and Elmer Ford's brother, Earnest, believes the identification originally printed in the Carthage Press and uses for the caption of this image was wrong. He says the person identified in the caption as Elmer is Ray, and the person identified as Ray is Elmer.
