IT ALL STARTED IN 1867.............
Carthage, Missouri has a long tradition of fielding all sorts of teams to play baseball with other towns. Within two years of returning to a ramshackled Carthage after the end of the Civil War, fans of the sport had created a team by the spring of 1867. The Carthage Baseball Club was organized by C L Shepherd (President), Alfred M Drake (Vice-president), George D Orner (Secretary) and John Reynolds (Treasurer).
One of the earliest accounts of the team's efforts was noted in the Carthage Banner newspaper (and repeated by Ward Schrantz in his local history column in the Carthage Press, December 21, 1950): "The Carthage Baseball Club was very active. Its dances which were held regularly received more newspaper publicity than did its games but on August 29 [1867] a game was played between the Granby [Missouri] 1st nine and the Carthage 1st nine. The game took place on the home grounds of the Carthage club south of town, south of Mr. Lamb's which probably were out somewhere near present-day Macon street."
The Schrantz article continued: "The Carthage team included George D Orner, lawyer and associate editor of the Banner, catcher; [C L] Shepard, apparently the house and sign painter, pitcher; [John] Reynolds short stop; [?] Cameron, 1st base; Bill Phelps, [Colonel W H Phelps] lawyer, 2nd base; L C Hall, 3rd base; [?] Talbot, left field; J T Ruffin, centerfield, and A M Drake, right field. The final score was Carthage 48 and Granby 41."
PURPOSE OF ON-LINE PRESENTATION & HOW TO USE THIS WEBSITE
The Powers Museum is placing these images from its archives on-line solely for the purpose of access. It is not our intent to present extensive research on the teams or players. John G. Hall of Columbia, MO, who is considered the KOM League historian (as well as historian for leagues in the area prior to the KOM years) has done marvelous work and his books, cited throughout this website, should be consulted by anyone wishing to learn more about any of the teams/towns/players presented here.
To browse this collection of photographs, please refer to the images on the left of this page. The first image/button will take you to the online exhibit of the entire JCSLA baseball photograph collection held by the Powers Museum regardless of team association. Buttons below the first one will take you directly to images based on team affliation. The last two buttons will take you to selected library resources on baseball in the Powers Museum Reference Library and a general presentation of miscellaneous baseball-related notes that should be considered a "work-in-progress."
Please note, in this gift lot the images were random and not all team members are included nor are there any team group shots. (Once on the "All Team Images" page you will be able to consult an index listing.) The museum highly recommends consulting John Hall's 1996 book entitled Majoring in the Minors or his 2004 book The KOM League Remembered for further information and images. (If you would like additional information about these titles, please contact the museum or click on "History & Resources" link to left.)
For those who played in the KOM League (or for relatives of former players and others interested in the topic) Mr. Hall maintains an email list, sending news and information. If you would like to be added to this list, please email the museum at pmuseum@ecarthage.com and we will forward your name/email address to Mr. Hall.
ATTENTION RESEARCHERS: The baseball photographs used on this website are the only baseball photographs owned by the Powers Museum with the exception of any local school iteam images that may be held in the Hawthorne School collection (being processed during the winter of 2006-07 and not accessible for consultation). Other baseball images would be found in Carthage High School and/or Ozark Wesleyan College yearbooks. These latter resources are not on-line at this time but researchers can consult these books at the museum (open mid-March through mid-December; consult www.powersmuseum.com for up-to-date schedule). ADVANCE appointment is advised since there are accessibility issues that prevent immediate access to some materials. CHS yearbooks are available at the Carthage Public Library as well (in the local history "room") during normal LIBRARY hours (currently Mon.- Wed. 9am to 8pm, Thurs. & Fri. 9am to 6pm, and Sat. 9am to 4pm, closed holidays and special events -- call 417-237-7040 to confirm hours if traveling from out of town especially during their two-year construction period that the library is now involved.)
