Carthage Pirates of the Arkansas-Missouri League, 1937-1940
This section contains photographs in the JCSLA gift lot that involve Carthage Pirates team members. The Pirates were part of the Arkansas-Missouri League, 1937-1940. Carthage did not enter the league until the 1938 season and since the new stadium in Municipal Park was not converted to use as a baseball park yet, the team trained in Carter Park (River & Chestnut, still open) and then on the baseball field at Hawthorn School (W. Central & Francis, no longer existing). Early games in the season were played in other towns until at mid-season, the new facility was ready. This stadium remains today and is located across from the Powers Museum in Municipal Park on West Oak Street. This street also doubled as the route for Highway 66 through Carthage to Carterville, MO. For further information on the Arkansas-Missouri League and its players, consult John Hall's MAJORING IN THE MINORS (copyright 1996), pages 7 - 20.
